Reflecting on the First Week of Digital Humanities

As opposed to meeting people where they are, where people of color, women, people with disabilities are already engaged in digital projects, there’s a making of room at an already established table.

This particular quote resonated with me because it indicates that history is important and requires members of more privileged or founding groups to look at themselves and recognize their shortcomings when making spaces for women, POC, etc. The quote frames diversity and inclusion in the digital humanities as incomplete, and argues for a different method of including such people. Instead of tying the digital humanities to one specific group, organization, or method, the quote recommends meeting women and non-white people where they are and relating it to the individual rather than trying to recruit them to the cause. This passage recommends that the privileged folks in the digital humanities develop a more flexible plan for inclusivity that does not involve assimilation into the pre-established digital humanities dynamic and culture.

This passage additionally reminded me of how small video game designers are dwarfed by the AAA companies and routinely resent the corporations for running them into the ground, yet the big developers never take the leap to reach out to the small developers and use their skills, or even support their often self-funded endeavors. However, small programmers continue to post videos of their own brilliant projects on YouTube, practically establishing their own table as small coders and developers. I have watched live updates on the development of a hyperbolic geometry-focused game, called Hyperbolica, on YouTube and it ended up getting published on Steam as an official game.

This term I am most excited to pursue more 3D modeling and the intersection between said modeling and data visualization. How interactive 3D renders are made is very interesting to me. Hopefully we can delve deeper into how to make interactive 3D renders and simulations that contain data visualization. I am interested in these things because out of all the computer science and STEM courses I have taken, 3D data visualization and modeling has consistently been the most interesting thing for me in each course. I seriously look forward to the opportunity to explore those methods this term in Digital Humanities 110.
