Data Visualization: Cave

Timeline

What the data is: We used all the dates and bands that have played at the Cave. We pulled this data from the Cave website using Carleton’s archive. We also included genre in the slideshow for the groups we were able to find it for by manually researching each group online.

What the data viz is doing: This timeline, at the most basic level, helps visualize the groups playing in the Cave over time. As we analyze this timeline more, and clean it up more, we will be able to see how frequently different groups played and what type of genres were most common at different times. So far it seems like in the past, the Cave had a lot higher interest. More artists and more repeat artists. In the 2010s, we were able to see less repeats, but more big names.

Network

What the data is: The network we have so far is showing which groups played on the same date as an edge. The nodes are the groups. The size of the nodes indicate how high or low a group’s listener count is. We got this data from the Carleton Cave website and LastFM.

What the data viz is doing: Our network analysis allows us to see connections between listener counts and which groups played together on the same date. It also helps us visualize the listener counts of all the artists that played at the Cave. The different colors indicate which genres are associated with each group.
