Final Project Data Visualization: Mapping Carleton Throughout the Years

What’s the data?

The data is many maps of the Carleton Arboretum through the years. The maps were obtained from the Carleton Digital Collections, specifically from the Cowling Arboretum Collection.

What does the visualization do?

The data visualization is an exploratory visualization based on multiple maps of the Carleton Arboretum throughout many points in time. All the maps have been georeferenced and layered on top of an ArcGIS Online base map. Using this visualization, you can compare and contrast the Arb throughout the years by seeing how certain topographical features have changed and how the land has developed over the years. For example, while much of the arb may have consisted of privately owned farmlands at some point, it has now expanded and this farmland has become part of the Arb itself. There are also many other interesting features of the individual maps that can offer a glimpse of the role of the arb in regard to the natural history surrounding the area. One example is the Turtle Map.
