Group Project Update

  • Progress
    • What have you done so far, who have you talked to, what have you gathered, and what have you built?

We have cleaned data sets from two museums(the British Museum and Cleveland Museum), and are working on the third one. We have merged the datasets for the first two museums together.

We also found the GIS database for China’s provinces map.

  • Problems (and proposed solutions)
    • What issues have you run into?

One issue was that some of our museum datasets don’t include provinces (locations) in China.

  • Have they forced you to change your initial plan?

We had to use other datasets, and for one dataset we would have to manually click through some links to search for them.

  • Do you have a proposed solution or do you need help formulating one?

The solution is to find all the objects at the suffix of the URL, then API calls can be made to obtain a subset of artifacts that do have specific provinces. Therefore we successfully avoided manually searching for provinces. The current API call takes a while and returns a few results, yet none of them match our parameters. The HTML tool we tried to use to grab the source code and filter out the element does not work, so we will have to find another way.

  • Tools and techniques
    • What applications/languages/frameworks have you selected and how are you going to implement them?

We use (excel and) Open Refine to process the csv files. We will use GIS to create embedded maps and WordPress for the web design. However, we are also thinking about using StoryMap from ArcGIS (storymap.arcgis.com) or Instant App(Createmap -> InstantApps -> map -> slider) which Austin introduced in class on Thursday.

  • Deliverables
    • An updated timeline of deliverables

Data cleaning is almost finished.

  • Are your project still on track?

yes
