Overall, most of the sources we will be using for our project come from the Carleton OCS office. On Wednesday, we met with the Carleton OCS director and data manager to discuss the logistics of gaining access to the primary data will be using. We are still waiting on receiving the data from them, but we also have found valuable information on the Carleton OCS webpage, the Carleton archives, and on the OCS 50th anniversary memories.
Off Campus Studies Program Page and Office

- This would be a full dataset of all Carleton OCS trips with any additional data they may have from their office Google Drives and from scraping their website. On the OCS program page, there is information about the programs currently running, which is extremely helpful.
- Format: This is formatted in a google sheet/csv with title of trip, faculty member, base location, and date. To get any further information we want, such as the number of years a program has run or total number of programs in a year etc. we can clean and extend this data using analysis software. Other information besides this csv might be photos, videos, quotes, and other documentation of student experiences. On the webpage, we can also use this information to pull quotes, get logistics information, and use photographs.
- Rights: The Carleton OCS Office owns the historical information about Carleton OCS trips. They are okay with us using the information they provide us for this project. Anything on the Carleton website is public and fair to use as long as credit is given where necessary (photos/videos/quotes).
- Privacy/Ethics: Previous OCS trip data, potentially including students/professors/advisors who went on the trip. Most of the information we will have is public information on the website, so privacy is waived. However, being careful with names and personal information is not a bad idea.
Carleton Archives
- Full Citation: Epstein , M. (Ed.). (2022, September 19). Carleton College Archives. Carleton. Retrieved November 3, 2022, from https://www.carleton.edu/library/collections/archives/
- There are several different collections that have information about off campus studies. The collections each have their own set of rights, however, most are open access. One photo collection used for the Visions of California program is restricted to on campus use. If we wanted to use any of the pictures from this collection we would need to reach out to the faculty tied to this collection and ask permission.
- Format: This will most likely be photos and maybe some other program information.
- Rights: This is owned by Carleton but is intended to be used for public research.
Privacy/Ethics: This is intended to be used by the public so not many privacy concerns, but again crediting photos and such is a good idea.
OCS 50th Anniversary Memories
- Full Citation: Ziegler, N. (Ed.). (2020, July 15). View the memories – Carleton College. Carleton. Retrieved November 3, 2022, from https://www.carleton.edu/ocs50/view-the-memories/
- These are personal stories and photos that people have posted about their OCS experience at Carleton dating as far back as 1969.
- Format: The format that the information is currently in could be transferred to our interactive map fairly easily and used to add to the storytelling and personal components of the project. Currently, there are images that could be uploaded and transferred to our own map, and quotes from people’s personal stories can be copied and pasted (with attributions).
- Rights: The Carleton OCS office owns this material, and it is managed by Naomi Zeigler from the OCS office.
- Privacy/Ethics: Because they were already posted on Carleton’s website, it can be assumed that the people who posted their stories are comfortable with them being shared. After speaking with the OCS office, they said there weren’t any privacy concerns since people already agreed to have these stories and photos posted publicly.
OCS Photo Contest

- These are all of the OCS Photo Contest Winners and Finalists going back to 2006.
- Format: The format of the information is photos that can be easily transferred to our own map and website. These photos highlight a lot of the scenery and experiences people encounter on their OCS programs, so it would add a lot of visual interest to our project.
- Rights: These photos are managed by the Carleton OCS office, and the webpage is specifically managed by Naomi Ziegler.
- Privacy: After speaking to the OCS director and data manager, they said that everyone who submits a photo to these contests signs a waiver saying they are okay with Carleton College using their photo, so privacy does not need to be a major concern for us. The only thing we need to ensure is that the location of the photo is documented correctly.
