Lab 6: Mapping Object Provenance

As part of our work digitizing Carleton’s special collection archive we created maps of the path that the objects took before arriving in Northfield. My group is working with a large covered jar with swirls that originated in China during the Han Dynasty.

ArcGIS Online is a powerful platform for creating maps to display data across both time and space. The online platform is especially in its potential for collaboration. When exploring the layers I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of options that were freely available for use. This presents great opportunities for collaboration and the sharing of data sets across communities. In the realm of DH it could make it relatively simple for groups of people to work on different layers of a web mapping project remotely and then combine them all together using the online platform.

I definitely ran into some difficulties with navigating the platform to make it do what I wanted. I think this is somewhat natural for such a robust platform but it does make it difficult to truly appreciate its more advanced capabilities. I know the tools I used to make this map just scratched the surface of its capabilities.
