So far, our experience with the Museum project has been good. Attempting to model an object allowed us to get a closer look at the object.
Our object was a small tower, which is likely an outhouse, with a pig residing nearby. Had we just looked at this object in the museum, it would have been much easier to glance over it and miss the finer details such as the open space below the roof seen below.
The process of photogrammetry definitely forced us to take a closer look and see the small details put into this project. It has definitely made me more curious about the design of this sculpture and what physical object it represented. It makes me more interested in the collection as a whole too.
Being an active modeler has made me more proactive about seeking out all the fine details so that I can display everything for other viewers. Whereas a passive observer feels no need to observe every detail since nobody else is relying on your observations. Therefore, it seems when communicating art and history to the public, I am more detailed and careful about the data then when I am solely the observer.
We have been successful in collecting the data to model this sculpture, but are still processing the model. Depending on the success of the model, we may need to revisit which photos we choose and how to maintain their quality in translation from phone to model.
