Web Mapping in DH
I found this process very satisfying because I could see a lot of applicability in future Digital Humanities projects. When viewing DH projects that have to do with locations or space, I really appreciate being able to see those aspects of the projects illustrated on a map, as the visual representation helps to increase the poignancy of certain subjects. Maps create an effective base layer to put more detailed information on, so I think they make a great foundation to a DH project. For this project in particular, I think the map helps to reveal just how far this artifact has come. It is neat to see it travel all the way from the Sichuan Province of China to Carleton College.
Experience with ArcGIS
Using ArcGIS produced a result I was happy with, but there were definitely points of frustration in navigating the software. At times the edits I made to points didn’t seem to ‘stick’ which forced me to have to redo certain portions. I think it would be helpful to have an automatic saving feature on the platform because I have grown out of the habit of manually saving projects, due to google drive automatically saving my work. There seems to be a lot that can be done with ArcGIS, and I would definitely like to explore the site more and have more practice with it.
