The main source that we plan to use for this project is the Cowling Arboretum Collection from the Carleton Digital Collections. The resource is a digital collection of different documents, photos, research, reports, and other mediums related to the Carleton Arboretum and its history. Most of the sources come from Carleton students and professors. The maps are in a pdf format that we have been able to convert to jpegs so that they can be georeferenced. Some of the maps are already in a TIF format, meaning that they have already been georeferenced which is easy for layering in our project. The archive is run by Carleton, specifically the Arboretum director Nancy Braker and is available to all Carleton students. The database is made by Carleton students and faculty for use by the community, so we are allowed to use the maps that we need. We have emailed the Arboretum director to ensure that our usage of the data is allowed and that we do not overstep the Arb website or any other existing pages. None of the data is sensitive or needs to be anonymized so we will be working with what is available in the database.
The maps that we plan to use that are not yet georeferenced (currently PDF) are:
1937 Carleton College Farm Lands Map
1964 Vegetational Map Of The Arboretum
We are also using aerial photos (TIF format) from this database that are georeferenced and are linked below:
Carleton College Arboretum Aerial Photo 1938
Carleton College Arboretum Aerial Photo 1951
Carleton College Arboretum Aerial Photo 1964
Carleton College Arboretum Aerial Photo 2016
We are also using the Cowling Arboretum Page as a resource as it has information about the history of the arboretum. The History Of The Arb page gives a general overview of the development of the Arb in chronological order, which is helpful for developing the timeline piece of our project. The source is also owned by Carleton and is in the public domain.
