Tutorial of DH Tool: Recogito

Recogito is an online tool for document annotation where it helps you organize the source materials in the form of texts, images or tables and sometimes automatically generates a suggestion for places (they call it gazetteers). In my opinion, it is useful in all posts and blogs for Digital Arts and Humanities work because what would be wrong to polish your work and make it more interesting?

First of all you would need to create an account. After registering, you will be automatically brought to the main page where there is a NEW button that allows you to upload documents.

Assume you want to annotate a text file today. Then you should upload it (click File Upload) and double click it to open it.

To create a text annotation, select text like you would in any word processing tool: either by clicking and dragging with your mouse, or by double clicking a word. You can add text comments and tags, as well as identify the selected text as a Place, Person or Event.

Assume you want to identify a place in the real world (unlike me, annotating a novel). Then you would want to click Place. If it is one of the gazetteers, then it will be recognized and the map-relevant information will show up. You would then want to click Confirm and OK.

Select the download icon in the main navigation bar. This will take you to the available export options for your document. In addition to the options listed on this page, you can also download a backup package of your work from the  document settings page.

On another day you might want to annotate an image. Again you should upload and open your image file. You can zoom or rotate it arbitrarily. In the toolbar, there is a drop-down menu where you can switch between Recogito’s different selection modes: Point, Rectangle and Tilted Box. Select Point and create an annotation by clicking somewhere in your image. Switch back to Move to resume standard image navigation.

I found the following links helpful: The first one is the original tutorial and second one explains what gazetteers are.

  1. Your tutorial is very detailed and easy to follow along. I found this tool to be very powerful, especially the function of annotating locations. I think this could work well together with GIS tools in visualizing texts containing a lot of places (e.g. documentation about the Peloponnesian war) for different DH projects.
