Tutorial – Creating a Website with Wix

Just like WordPress, Wix is an application that provides cloud-based services used for building websites. It is considered the best web design software due to the ease with which it is used compared to other software. This is because it has a very easy learning curve and also does not require web design languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as other web builders do.

I realized that Wix is one of the applications that firmly supports my argument about whether humanities students should learn to code. It questioned the question, “Should humanities students learn to code?” The phrasing of the question meant that coding should be considered a requirement in the humanities, which I disagreed with. Nevertheless, it is a useful skill for a person to learn. Wix comes into the picture to stretch the question, “What if I want to do something that requires coding without having to code a thing?” A humanities student who asks this question should start using Wix. With its easy-to-use interface, one can create and host a website within minutes irrespective of their experience with the platform. This goes a long way to help humanities students allocate more time to working on their projects.

Here is how a simple site can be created on Wix:

After creating an account on the platform, you will see a default theme in your Wix editor. You can change it to what you want by clicking Try a new look in the theme section. If you are using the free version, you will have access to a small number of themes.

The default theme comes with three web pages: Home, Blog, and Contact Me. You can click on the top right of the website section to add a web page. Nevertheless, the default pages can do the job for now.

When it’s time to edit the web pages, click Home on the website section to view the home page. Edit it to your desired taste by adding or deleting Sections. Do the same for the Blog and Contact Me pages.

In order to add content on the Blog, access the Website Builder tab and select My Blog.

Select Create Post to create a new post. This post can be accessed on the Blog tab from the home page.

After you make a blog post, navigate back to the Wix editor’s main page and click Publish to publish your website. Every new Wix account has a free domain. You can also edit your domain name to your preference in the settings section before you publish your website.

  1. I really enjoyed your tutorial! This does seem like a really awesome web design software that is not super difficult to use. Throughout this class, it’s been cool to learn ways to create webpages and sites without an enormous amount of coding.

  2. I really found this tutorial helpful, as someone who’s tried to use Wix before and found it quite confusing. While I’ve enjoyed using WordPress, I’m glad I was able to learn about and become able to use it and alternatives such as WordPress. I agree that it’s good to have tools like this that allow you to make a website without coding.

Ultimately, I decided to create my own personal Wix site by following the steps you described, and the results achieved were very satisfactory. I also have a few questions for you. What do you think are the main similarities and differences between WordPress and Wix? What is better on WordPress? What is better on Wix?

  4. I liked your tutorial! I’ve used Wix in the past and this tutorial was a great refresher. I wonder if Wix has a similar functionality to WordPress when it comes to using it as a hub for a class (like in this class) Were Wix’s themes better than wordpresses? Was it easier to use?

  5. Your tutorial so easy to understand. Thank you so much for that. I’ve used Wix before for my organization but soon had to delete it because it wasn’t helping much. But I agree with you that it is extremely user friendly and it is not necessary for one to have coding skills to create a Wix website. Perhaps in your tutorial you could have compared it to other website hosting companies such as WordPress in regards to aspects like aesthetics, functionality, paid/unpaid packages available, themes, amongst others.

  6. Thanks Bennet! This is something that I’ve wanted to learn for a while, but have never really gotten around to. I love to code, but seeing the great website you made with Wix, I think I’ll opt for more no-code options in the future. However, I am curious as to how far you can take a website with Wix. Can you integrate ArcGIS embeddings? Can you tie a database into it? So many questions!
